# ChatGPT video editor for Mac

Your idea, edited by ChatGPT.

Give ChatGPT your idea and your footage. With videoFn it picks a direction, puts the edit together and fixes what it finds, so the first thing you watch is already a video.

videoFn is a Mac video editor that Claude or ChatGPT can drive. Describe the video, watch it come together in the preview and give notes. If you'd rather fix something yourself, the editor is right there.

## ChatGPT has opinions about your video.

Ask ChatGPT how your launch video should go and it will tell you, at length. Then the actual editing is your problem.

videoFn gives ChatGPT an editor on your Mac: a timeline, a transcript with a time for every word, the beats in your music, a preview it can look at and a renderer. So the opinions turn into cuts, titles and an exported file, and you get to have opinions about those instead.

## Where ChatGPT earns its keep.

### It makes the pictures too

Need a backdrop, a product on a clean background or an illustration for the end card? ChatGPT generates the image and videoFn adds it to the project, background cut out if you ask.

### It doesn't get bored

Three different openings, a vertical cut for Reels, a version without the music. ChatGPT keeps going long after you would have settled for the first draft.

### It edits to the words

Speech is transcribed on your Mac with a time for every word. ChatGPT uses it for captions, for titles that land on the right line and for cuts that don't clip a sentence.

### It checks before you look

Text you can't read, cuts in the middle of a word, titles that leave too early. ChatGPT reviews the rendered frames, fixes what it finds and checks again.

## Three openings before lunch.

make three different openings for this launch video so I can compare them

opening A · cold open on the product

opening B · the problem first

opening C · fast montage to the beat

B. then make a vertical version for reels

keeping opening B

reframing each shot for 9:16

moving captions clear of the app buttons

the end card needs a background. dark blue, a bit of grain

generating the image

adding it to the project

placing it behind the end card

Versions are cheap when someone else makes them. Ask for a few takes on the same idea and choose with your eyes rather than your imagination.

Each note builds on the last, and the preview updates as ChatGPT works, so you can stop it before it commits to a bad idea.

Rather fix something yourself? Drag it in the editor and tell ChatGPT to carry on from there.

## Setup is one button.

Download videoFn and open it. The ChatGPT app for Mac comes with OpenAI Codex built in, and the videoFn launch screen lists it under that name. Click Connect, start a new chat in ChatGPT and ask for a video.

You'll need a Mac with Apple Silicon and the ChatGPT app. If you already have both, you're done reading instructions.

## Questions, answered.

Which ChatGPT works with videoFn?

The ChatGPT app for Mac. It includes OpenAI Codex, which is what videoFn connects to, so the standalone Codex app and the Codex CLI work as well.

Do I need to know how to edit?

No. Describe the video the way you'd describe it to a person and react to what you see. Knowing what you like is the only skill required.

Can ChatGPT make images for my video?

Yes. It generates them and videoFn adds them to the project, with the background removed if you need a cut-out. videoFn records which images were generated, so you always know which pictures are real.

Where does my footage go?

The files stay on your Mac, where videoFn transcribes and renders them. ChatGPT only sees what videoFn reports, such as transcripts and preview frames, and those go to OpenAI as part of your chat.

Should I use ChatGPT or Claude?

Whichever you already pay for. Both get the same editor and the same checks. If you have both, try each on the same brief. See [edit video with Claude](/landing/edit-video-with-claude).

## The catch, such as it is.

ChatGPT edits what you bring and makes images to go with it. It can't film the product shot you forgot to record, and a generated picture of your product is not your product.

You buy videoFn once. ChatGPT runs on your own OpenAI account, so long sessions count towards your usage. And however many versions it makes, choosing the good one is still your job.
